The Dog Days of Summer

The Dog Days of Summer

It's August, and the dog days of summer are upon us. The dreaded return to school looms for kids everywhere; leaves will soon turn from green to orange; and it's almost boot season. Still, it's hot and a little hazy in many parts of the country. Despite what many people think, though, the "dog days" aren't so named for our fur-covered friends who laze about in the heat. That would seem to make sense, but the phrase actually comes from ancient Greece, when astronomers noticed that the Sirius constellation (a.k.a. the "dog star") appeared in the sky at this time of year.

Regardless of its origin, the phrase "dog days of summer" conjures the warm, relaxed feeling that late August brings. It's a time when we revel in those last vestiges of vacation, fancy cocktails, fun, and family. And if your relatives are anything like ours, your pets are treated like full-fledged family members. That explains why the pups in the photos below are wrapped in the lap of luxury, snuggling and snoozing on Matouk sheets and drying off after a tub with our plushest towels. Despite the heat, these dogs have it made in the shade. Because, really, when you treat your pets like royalty, aren't they all dog days?
