Tilton Fenwick Uses our Interactive Bedding Design Tool to Put the Finishing Touches on a Guestroom for One of Their Own

Tilton Fenwick Uses our Interactive Bedding Design Tool to Put the Finishing Touches on a Guestroom for One of Their Own

Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro Cunningham of boutique interior design firm Tilton Fenwick recently decorated Anne's country home in Garrison, NY. They paired wall fabric of their own design with Matouk bedding they selected using uMatouk, our interactive bedding design tool. All photo credits: Patrick Cline.

Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro Cunningham are the force behind Tilton Fenwick, a buzzy boutique interior design firm known for fearlessly incorporating color and print while simultaneously acknowledging and embracing tradition.

While Anne and Suysel put their hearts and souls into every Tilton Fenwick project, their latest is particularly personal—Anne’s new country house in Garrison, NY. “We had been dying to do a country house, and the setting of Anne’s house in Garrison allowed us to embrace the traditional florals that we’ve always loved,” they tell us. “It has been a wonderful opportunity for us to use so many of the fabrics we designed with Duralee. [Their Tilton Fenwick for Duralee collection launched just last year.] We used a different fabric from the collection in every room!”

The guestroom was the perfect place to test-drive an elegant yellow fabric with flowers in green, blue, and white. A hand-carved wooden poster bed added an artful touch. The only thing missing? The linens.

We invited Anne and Suysel to select Matouk bedding by trying out uMatouk. This new interactive digital tool enables users to visualize how different Matouk bedding styles and colors coordinate on a virtual bed. After some experimentation, the pair came up with a sophisticated combination that includes our Providence in White Pique with Navy trim (duvet cover, euro shams, and boudoir shams), our Butterfield in Cornsilk (sheeting and pillowcases), and our Diamond Pique in Azure (standard shams and coverlet). (See the full order below.)

The beautiful—and ultra-inviting—results can be seen in these photos by talented interiors photographer Patrick Cline.

Here, Anne and Suysel tell us about their experience using uMatouk and fill us in on all the latest with Tilton Fenwick.

How do you describe your work?
We describe our work as having a traditional aesthetic with a fresh perspective. We like to embrace the unexpected in both color and pattern, while always infusing comfort into our rooms.

How has your style evolved in the five years you have worked together?
Our clients allow us to take risks, which has helped us trust our instincts more.

Aside from Anne's house (which we'll get to in a moment!) what are some other interior projects you are currently working on?
We just finished doing a “Dining Lounge” for this years Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York, which was a fast and fun project. We also just finished a project in Austin, TX for a young family who recently moved there from New York.

What was that like?
It was our first project outside of the greater New York area, which was really exciting. We were very inspired by the rich heritage and style of the area. We also found some great new vendors down there that we used specifically for sourcing tile, lighting, and vintage furniture and accessories.

So on to Anne's house in Garrison! What’s it like being your own client?
The excitement of installing a house and then being able to stick around and enjoy it is wonderful. And for Anne, knowing that she’ll be creating family memories in the house is so special.

Did geography influence your style? (Like, had it been located in Palm Beach, would the house have been designed differently?)
Yes! If it had been in Palm Beach, it would have been decorated completely differently. Anne’s house dates back to 1850, so the architecture of the house really lent itself to our traditional aesthetic. We also really worked the country chic vibe.

The Matouk bedding featured here is in the guest room. What was the approach to that particular room?
We love how the yellow color of the wall fabric makes the room feel cozy, yet cheerful for weekend guests.

The fabric in the room is one of your own designs…
This pattern is named Cecilia, after Suysel’s daughter. It is a multicolor floral, which really embodies our Duralee collection. We worked with Duralee to create lots of traditional florals that were updated in unexpected colors.

When it comes to designing guest rooms, are there any particular rules of thumb you live by?
We design guest bedrooms in the same way we design master bedrooms. You want your guests to feel all the comforts of home. Many people who have seen this room have said to us, “Your guests are never going to want to leave!”

You used uMatouk tool to design the linens. What were your considerations?
We really wanted to pull out colors from the Cecilia fabric, so we decided to pull out the navy, which is a small detail in the fabric, and then mix in the light blue.

Your final order was a combination of Providence, Butterfield, and Diamond Pique. Why were you drawn to that combination?
We love the Diamond Pique for its practicality and beauty. It wears well (you never have to iron it!), but is still really soft. We also choose the Providence and Butterfield styles because we love scallops, but wanted to mix the scallop detail in different scales.

What was your experience using the uMatouk tool?
We loved using the uMatouk tool! It was really fun to be able to play around with different styles and see the whole look come together instead of having to try to visualize it in our heads. It made it so easy to know that our choices were all going to work so well together.
