Visiting Lulu DK in the Hamptons

Visiting Lulu DK in the Hamptons

The life of Matouk collaborator Lulu de Kwiatkowski is as fabulous as the work she creates. The artist, textile designer, and trendsetter is the creative force behind our Lulu DK for Matouk bedding and bath lines. We recently caught up with this globetrotting mother of three, who splits her summers between the Italian Riviera (check out her family photos and favorite spots here) and the Hamptons, on Long Island, New York.

Here, we take a peek inside Lulu’s Southampton home and learn how she spends her time there. (Hint: It includes lots of fresh corn and seashells.) When you′re done obsessing over her beautiful space, check out our newest Pinterest board, Hamptons Havens for even more inspiration.

How long have you been spending time in the Hamptons?

I have been going to the Hamptons since I was born. My parents had a house in Quogue where we spent the summers and weekends. So it′s safe to say that it is deep in my blood.

What do you love most about being in the Hamptons?

The beach, the greenery, the hydrangeas, the bare feet, the BBQs, and being so easily surrounded by friends and family.

What are some of your favorite activities?

Biking to the beach and staying until sunset; waterskiing in the bay; feeding the ducks that live below a little bridge; collecting shells on the beach; eating a whole lot of fresh tomatoes and corn.

What are your favorite shops?

I think Calypso St. Barth was born in the Hamptons; it remains the place go to fulfill my summer wardrobe. I am also a sucker for
Hildreth’s
in Southampton. I always love to do a kitchen restock when I′m there, and of course gander at the beautiful Lulu DK for Matouk section!

Does your Hamptons home have a different vibe from the one in Los Angeles? Is there a certain style that says "Hamptons" to you?

The aesthetic is pretty similar, actually. Both have a clean, white, airy feel with pops of pastel color. I love the beach house feel in general — relaxed and easy, with nothing that′s stuffy or serious. They both definitely have a beach-y Hamptons-meets-Italian-coast feeling.

Do you have a stack of Lulu DK for Matouk beach towels? And do you bring the kids to the beach a lot, or do you stick to your pool?

Our family′s middle name is water, so we love both. I find the beach therapeutic and healing. That said, the Lulu DK for Matouk towels follow us everywhere (and we get compliments on them everywhere). I also love giving them as summer gifts. People love the colors and that they have a happiness about them.

What other Matouk items do you use in the Hamptons?

Well, I am not just saying this because I am loyal, but Matouk products are the most comfortable and well-made products out there, so I am lucky that I make them and get to have them (have to have them!) all over my house. I generally like to keep my walls and upholstery white, then I mix in the Lulu DK for Matouk patterns and prints and let them shine.

What are your bedtime rituals with the boys in the summer?

We are pretty strict. We′re not the types to let them run outside until all hours of the night, but usually they can stay up
a little later since it stays light out longer. They are still little, so they like me to read and sing to them. They won’t be babies forever; I love to take advantage of their snuggles!

Do you paint while you′re there? What inspires your art in the Hamptons?

Yes, I paint everywhere I go. I try and get the vibe for the nature and core of a place and then try and pull inspiration from that. It might be beach umbrellas, particular plants or trees, the rolling waves, or bowls full of tomatoes or vegetables from the local farmers' market.

Have you found inspiration in the Hamptons for any of your Matouk pieces?

For sure! Inspiration is everywhere. Sailboats and beach umbrella towels, hydrangea bedding, shell bedding, and tea towels. Really it′s endless and probably why Matouk and I are such a good match!
