10 Holiday Essentials: The Retailer—Sue Fisher King

Sue Fisher King with her beloved dog, Skittles.

No visit to San Francisco would be complete without a visit to Sue Fisher King, the gorgeously curated Pacific Heights home boutique whose charming and savvy proprietor has been called “a treasure in her own right.”

Her shop is packed with ideas for checking off your holiday shopping list, and we were delighted to have her share her own personal 10 Holiday Essentials with us.

Read on, and don’t forget to check out interior designer Sara Gilbane’s Holiday Essentials list, which we posted last week.

clockwise from bottom left: The Classic Caramel Sauce by Seaside sweets is Sue Fisher King’s no-fail hostess gift for sweet tooths (1, below.) She also likes Omnivore Salt & Organic Spices as a savory treat (1, below). Christmas morning wouldn’t be complete without Sue’s beloved dog, Skittles. Matouk’s Lowell bedding is the centerpiece of her guestroom (2, below). She will be giving her friend this book, published this fall, called Elsie de Wolfe’s Paris (6, below).

1. The no-fail hostess gift you have stashed in your closet to cart to any open house or dinner party? Definitely the Classic Caramel Sauce by Seaside Sweets. It’s made by one of our employees and is delicious over ice cream. As a savory counterpoint, I love Omnivore Salt & Organic Spices. It’s made by a friend and is wonderful rubbed into meats or chicken. We carry both in our store.

2. Your guest room essential for weary holiday guests?
A fresh-looking boudoir pillow covered in Matouk’s Lowell bedding.

3. Your #1 holiday tabletop essential?
A row of paper whites down the center of the table.

4. If Santa really wants to make this a Christmas to remember, he'll bring you (personally!) this item from your wish list…
Another set of Matouk’s Mirasol sheets with a lavender trim.

5. In your house, Christmas morning wouldn't be complete without…
My dog, Skittles.

6. You've been waiting all year to give your _______ this item for the holidays...For a friend, a book on Elsie de Wolfe living in Paris.

7. For someone who doesn't want to go all out, but still wants to decorate a bit for the holidays, what's your favorite seasonal decorative piece?
A line of little tiny cedar trees in silver julep cups on the mantel.

8. Is there any particular look or trend you're loving for the holiday season this year?
We have been selling a lot of silver ornaments, sparkly silver trees, and linen napkins threaded with silver, which makes for a beautiful, subtle table.

9. The thing that makes the holidays in San Francisco so special and unique is…
To get into the Christmas spirit, you can hear or participate in Christmas music with the San Francisco Symphony or in local churches, and because of our mild climate, you can go hiking on Christmas Day and enjoy the outdoors.

10. Your personal favorite spot to enjoy the outdoors on Christmas?
I usually go for a walk around the hills of Sausalito where I live and call people all over the world to wish them Happy Holidays. This year I may travel to my favorite spa in Tecate, Mexico.
