Everything You Need to Know About Matouk Blankets

This is an edited version of a post that originally appeared on November 12, 2015.

If you’re looking for cozy this winter...we’ve got you covered. Matouk has always considered the blanket one of the most important, and delightful, layers to consider when creating your dream bed.

“We love blankets for the tactile, textural and decorative feelings they bring to the bedroom,” said Matouk CEO George Matouk Jr. “We see many blankets in the market as we visit our suppliers, shop in exciting stores, and stay in great hotels. But a Matouk blanket has to be unique and bring something special to our customers. And it also has to be made in an environment where we can trust both the manufacturing process and the harvesting process of the basic materials. Our product development team works patiently and perpetually to find the rare opportunities where these values intersect..”  Here’s an overview of some of our all time favorites, plus our new star for Fall 2016.

Handsome striping brings sophisticated elegance to this ultra-luxurious modern classic. Urbino is made from a cotton-wool blend that is so velvety soft, you’ll never want to get out of bed.

“When we took a look at our blankets and throws,” said Annie Graham, Designer at Matouk, “we realized that not only did we want a greater variety, but that we also needed to bring a true winter blanket into the mix.” The answer: Cordoba. Crafted from 100 percent brushed baby alpaca, Cordoba provides warmth and insulation without too much weight. A refined and luxurious style, it makes an elegant choice for the master bedroom. Cordoba comes in two versatile colors: Granite coordinates with all of the greys in our line, including Slate, Silver and Charcoal; Ivory can be paired with White, Ivory, or Champagne.

You knew chunky knits were having a moment in fashion, but did you know they’re incredibly chic in the bedroom, too? Our new Orla is woven from a fine yarn that has been plied together many times for a large-scale effect. With a homespun yet luxurious appeal, this hearty knit throw brings a welcome layer of texture to the bed—just as a dose of raffia, wood, or leather can add a counterpoint to all the fabric elements in a bedroom. Made from 85 percent cotton and 15 percent wool, Orla is warm and retains a soft hand. Orla is available in three easy-to-pair shades: Ivory, Champagne, and Pewter. While Orla is the size of a traditional throw (50”x70”), its loose weave means it can be stretched across the width of a queen size bed.

“Greta is the most couture throw in our offering; it’s a beautiful choice for the master bedroom,” said Annie Graham, who revealed that when you see a bit of sheen in a blanket, it’s a hint that it is woven from silk. Indeed, our new Greta is made in Italy from a unique combination of wool, cashmere, and luxurious silk. The two-tone fringed throw features a pale color on one side and a darker, more saturated version of the same shade on the other. The colors coordinate with many accent colors in our bedding: Azure pairs with our Azure and Blue bedding accent colors; Aquamarine pairs with Aquamarine and Lagoon; Champagne pairs with Champagne and Ivory; and Grey pairs with Silver and Charcoal. Gorgeous on the master bed or elsewhere in the home, Greta makes a stunning and unforgettable gift.

Done in a timeless Greek key motif, our Arcadia throw adds punch to the bottom of a bed or the arm of a sofa. Woven in Portugal from 50 percent modal and 50 percent cotton, this double-knitted throw is appropriately weighty, but comparably lightweight, making it great for the warmer months. Done in Bronze, Navy, and Pewter with White, it punctuates living and sleeping spaces throughout the home.

Our 100 percent Egyptian cotton waffle weave blanket, Chatham is a welcome lightweight layer for the bed. Done in a range of sizes (King, Full/Queen, Twin, and Baby Blanket) in an even greater number of colors (Ivory, Linen, White; and Pink and Blue in Baby blanket size), Chatham serves a many purposes—baby gift, blanket for a child’s bed, or extra layer for the master or guestroom during the summer or in warmer climates.

Dream Modal

As we’ve pointed out in the past, our Dream Modal blanket is, hands-down, the insider’s favorite Matouk product. A bit from our ode to Modal: “Our Dream Modal may just be the most genius item our designers have ever come up with. Here’s why: We took Modal—a natural, manmade fiber—and combined it with cotton for a blanket that is both unbelievably breathable and supremely soft. Our Dream Modal blanket makes a perfect layering piece with a duvet for winter and stands alone over sheeting in the warmer months. Because it’s machine washable, it’s a “dream” to care for as well as to sleep under!” Modal comes in four easy-to-pair shades (Champagne, Charcoal, Oyster, and Silver) and in sizes that run the gamut from King to Lap Throw.

We were so mad for Dream Modal that we decided to release it as a print. Done as an Oversized Throw (56”x96”) and Lap Throw, Evora is a nuanced and painterly print inspired by the look of traditional Portuguese tiles. In creamy white with shades of blue, aqua, and green, it pairs with many of the most popular bedding colors in our line. Try the oversized version as a narrow coverlet that drapes over the edge of the bed or the traditional lap throw as a beautiful accent on a sofa or bench.

Stripes are perennial and so is Salinas. Peruvian artisans with a long tradition of weaving baby alpaca make these stunning throws for us. The smooth, finely spun yarn does not itch and will not shed. Salinas is available in three vibrant color combinations, all featuring enduringly chic ombre stripes. The color palettes (Aquamarine, Azure, and Bronze) match back to our Nocturne sheeting and all the styles that use those popular colors in the Nocturne sateen. Striking the perfect balance between subtle and statement making, Salinas makes a beautiful and memorable gift.

Our Soledad throws are as soft and luxurious as cashmere, but at a more accessible price. Made from our “Lamora” blend—a sophisticated combination of lambswool and angora—they are a matte counterpoint to our new Greta which has a bit of sheen. Lofty and soft, Soledad comes in eight saturated shades. The colors pair with accent colors throughout our bedding collections, making Soledad a gorgeous addition to any bedroom.
