Matouk Powered by the Sun

Matouk generated energy and excitement during a landmark event centered at our Fall River, MA headquarters on April 6th.

Joined by Congressman Frank, Mayor Flanagan and other officials, we officially flipped the switch on our new 84kw solar energy system. See photos and coverage below.

Matouk to Flip the Switch on the Largest Solar Energy System
in Southeastern Massachusetts

solar panel installation

John Matouk & Co will officially “flip the switch” on an 84 kw solar-powered energy system—the largest in Southeastern Massachusetts—during a special ceremony at the Matouk factory in the Fall River Industrial Park. U.S. Congressman Barney Frank and Fall River Mayor William Flanagan will be in attendance.

President and CEO George Matouk Jr. saw the decision to turn to solar power as a compelling investment for his business both economically and socially, explaining, “Based on the support of Commonwealth Solar and the Federal Government, we were able to make a powerful statement about the company’s commitment to the future of our business, to a more sustainable energy standard and, of course, to a cleaner environment.”

The 81-year old company has invested deeply in its vibrant Fall River production facility, the community of Fall River, its skilled local workforce, and now—through its solar energy installation on the roof—its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and make a tangible commitment to social responsibility.

Matouk’s new system will reduce carbon emissions by 176,022 lbs of CO2 annually. This is equivalent to the emissions from an average passenger car driving 336,373 miles every year for thirty years, and the CO2 that would be removed by planting 70 acres of trees. This system will also reduce Nitrogen oxide emissions by 15,300 lbs over the life of the system—nitrogen oxides are a major contributor to smog and air induced respiratory problems.

Already generating power since January, the system can be monitored through a special reporting site set up by Borrego Solar Systems, the Lowell, Massachusetts-based company that designed and installed it. Visit siteapp.fatspaniel.net to see how much energy Matouk’s system is producing in real time.

Matouk sponsors New Bedford Whaling Museum exhibit,
Needle/Work: Art, Craft, and Industry in a Port City.

The exhibit provides an opportunity to examine, for the first time, the roles that such work played in the social, economic, and cultural lives of New Bedford’s men and women between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition, which will run until the end of 2008, is intended to bring new attention to the region’s textile heritage and expand the understanding of the interconnectedness and multicultural character of the whaling and textile industries.
